Local Scholarship Program Aims To Help Students Pay For College

Graduating seniors should be celebrating this month. For many of them, they’ve already started making plans for the fall, including those going to college. It’s a normal rite of passage. However, unfortunately, there is nothing “normal” about what’s going on these days.

For plenty of soon-to-be college freshmen, they’d already begun figuring out how they were going to pay for tuition and books, and living expenses. Then the Coronavirus happened, putting millions of people out of work, and leaving some kids with questions about how they’ll be able to go to college at all.

More than ever, tools like scholarships are vital. Thousands are available to college students. You just have to go find them, both nationally and locally.

In fact, here in Pittsburgh, Chaffin Luhana LLP offers an annual $2,500 scholarship through its charitable arm, the Chaffin Luhana Foundation.

The organization has launched the 2020 National Chaffin Luhana Anti-Distracted Driving Scholarship Essay Contest, an annual competition for high school seniors and undergrads to raise awareness and reward students who help in the fight to make the roads safer for everyone.

The cause is also personal to the Foundation. Paralympian and Foundation spokesperson Stephani Victor lost her legs in a crash caused by a distracted driver.

Law partners Eric Chaffin and Roopal Luhana, along with their families, established The Chaffin Luhana Foundation in 2010 to honor their humble roots and build upon the values of integrity and resilience instilled in them by their hardworking parents.

A not-for-profit organization, the Foundation encourages the development of human potential and supports community empowerment through the endowment of funds to deserving recipients, the creation of community-based enrichment projects, and the support of important scientific research that meaningfully impacts the under-privileged and sick in society.

With the goal of fostering acceptance, understanding, and an inclusive and healthy environment for everyone, the Foundation seeks to highlight individuals who are displaying outstanding characteristics in their lives, and bring all walks of life together in ways that invite positive interaction, while rewarding those resilient people willing to face difficult challenges, get back up, and surge forth once again.
