NYPD K9s Lend A Helping Paw To Military Dogs Overseas

There are many people and organizations out there who work to send cards, gifts and other items to troops overseas for the holidays (including this woman who will send over 100K cards to soldiers this year!), but what about the four-legged heroes that work tirelessly to protect our country? Dont they deserve a special holiday treat?

Operation War Dogs works year-round to collect donations for the militarys working canines. Among the supplies that are included in care packages that are sent overseas are dog toys, treats, and equipment to help the animals deal with the harsh terrain, like cooling vests and Doogles to keep the sand out of their eyes. Another special item thats included in each box are thank you letters from elementary school students.

The special operation in NYC was conducted with nonprofit Blue Lives Matter-NYC K9, the NYC Department of Corrections and law enforcement motorcycle club Vigilance LEMC. The drive brought in enough combined donations to pack about 30 boxes, which will be shipped out over the weekend to the dogs handlers in Afghanistan.

According to the New York Police Department, department K9s Timoshenko, Marci and Russel lent their paws to a packing party in Staten Island last weekend where the NYPD Special Ops unit worked alongside volunteers to divvy up the donations and get them ready to be shipped out.

They even posted a photo of one of the dogs sporting some colorful knitwear to Twitter, along with the caption, We told Russel he could keep one thing, and he chose the sweater.

While it was the first year for the NYC organizations to work together to collect supplies for Operation War Dogs, it was so successful that theyre already planning another drive for next year. Who knows? Maybe Russell will celebrate the tradition by wearing his favorite holiday sweater.

You can make a donation to Operation War Dogs by sending money via PayPal, or by visiting their online donation page. Additionally, you can purchase items for the care packages and mail them to the organization or drop them off at participating locations.
